CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Nikola

As Asher passed by a random Blood Follower, he grabbed her by the arm and took her by the throat with his teeth. Her screams echoed off the walls, and Nikola grimaced in sympathy. He’d just experienced the liquid fire that was a Blood Follower’s bite, the wounds in his neck still burning with the pain. Fortunately for the young woman, Asher didn’t drink for long before shoving her off. Another Blood Follower caught her as she clutched her bleeding neck, her breaths wheezing.

Asher frowned. “Did ya go to Grander Community High School?”

“W-what?” she gasped, blinking up at her superior. She didn’t seem to register the question, still recovering.

Asher grunted, “Never mind,” and departed from the building. Nikola stood where he was, dumbstruck by everything that’d happened within the last hour. Asher had been, as per tradition, a storm of severe emotions, but Nikola believed this was the first time he’d seen the scarred vampire so melancholic. And the reactions he’d had toward Riccardo... it was clear he was desperate to not be caught in the position they’d been in. Was it because of the sexual nature? Or out of pride?

No, there’d been too much fear involved. Did Nikola have anything to do with the reason Asher had been missing for the last couple nights? He still hadn’t uncovered any information. Truth be told, he’d mostly forgotten his orders while he had Asher pinned beneath him.

Nikola had never fed from a Blood Follower before, he realized with a start. He never would’ve believed they could be that... delicious. If someone had asked him beforehand what a Blood Follower tasted like, he would’ve guessed death and decay, but Asher had tasted like ripened fruit with a kick of what reminded Nikola of the scent of cinnamon.

The sounds Asher Black made . . .

Nikola shouldn’t stick around here. Maybe he should follow Asher, wherever he was going. He spotted Asher’s leather jacket rumpled nearby and decided that was the perfect excuse. Or, well, it was the only one. He began to make his leave, but on his way out, Riccardo caught him by the shoulder.

“Don’t make that mistake in front of your disciples,” Nikola growled, unabashedly meeting Riccardo’s gaze. He’d never properly met Riccardo before, though he knew the Masked Vampire had been acting as a Master before Asher. Despite the fact Nikola was greatly outnumbered, he’d have no problem batting off the untrained Blood Followers. But why did Malkolm need so many? He did a quick headcount to report back to Morrigan later.

“I just have a proposition,” Riccardo answered evenly. “Then you can be on your way. We have our orders not to hurt you, after all.”

Nikola grunted. Riccardo removed his hand and said, “We know not what binds you to Lady Morrigan, but we could offer you something greater if you ever wished to serve under Lord Malkolm.” It was like a lightbulb going off in Nikola’s skull. That’s what’s happening. Malkolm seeks me out. All the special attention from the Blood Follower key players caused Nikola’s stomach to roil uneasily.
